Intimations

"Acknowledging the canvas as an object, I transform it into a three dimensional space by blending oil paint in one color with graduated tones. I then blend a foreground color into this background, adjusting the values between the two grounds to bring the foreground color into prominence. The background acts like a base; holding and coaxing the foreground color into levels of radiance. This dominant foreground color is my muse; it represents the life force at its most reduced and vital - pared down to an essence - where the color has a physical actuality that seems to glow and breathe." - GH

"Acknowledging the canvas as an object, I first transform it into a three dimensional space by blending oil paint in one color, with graduated tones. Into this space, I introduce a foreground color, which blends seamlessly with the background color and creates the illusion of an emerging form that oscillates between physical presence and atmosphere. Fine adjustments between the tonality and saturation of both background and foreground colors create an illusion of subtle movement and animation.
The colors and tones I work with are inspired by the spectrum of human skin tones and effects of light and shadow. Skin tone colors carry emotional and existential weight while the colors of light and shadow convey illusions of proximity and distance. What fascinates me in particular, is the extent to which the foreground color radiates and glows in front of the picture plane. Together as a series, the paintings are a kind of visual allegory of universality.” GH
