OFER WOLBERGER | Reproductions
March 3 - April 15, 2016
Opening Reception: March 3, 6-9pm
In the gallery’s Waiting Room, Brooklyn-based artist Ofer Wolberger will present “Pinocchio x5”, a series of five paintings depicting the iconic Disney character in seated repose. Installed sequentially around the gallery space, the paintings function much like animation cells culled directly from the animated feature film. Though the canvases appear almost identical, each subsequent image actually reveals a slight increment of growth in the boy-puppet’s fabled nose. Expanding on the concept of the repeated image as detailed in his 2015 triptych “Pinocchio I-III”, Wolberger’s new work continues to explore notions of reproduction, imitation and the proliferation of the copy.
Ofer Wolberger (b. 1976) received his MFA in Photography and Related Media from The School of Visual Arts. In 2008 he received The Humble Arts Foundation’s Grant for Emerging Photographers. That same year he was a finalist for the prestigious BMW Paris Photo Prize, followed by the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie in 2009. Wolberger completed a series of 12 self-published artists books (known collectively as 12 Books) and was awarded the Printed Matter Award for Artists in 2012. His work has been widely shown in both US and international galleries and museums. In 2015 the artist had his first solo show of paintings at Stene Projects in Stockholm, Sweden, and received a favorable review in Artforum Magazine. Wolberger’s photographs have been featured in several publications including The New York Times, Wired Magazine, GQ, Life, Metropolis and New York Magazine.
