SARA RUSSELL | Checking In | TABLE
January 7 - February 9, 2024
I make objects that you can hold in your hand, similar to a coin or stone. Sometimes they find their way into existing locations, inserted directly into a space or created in response to it. For Checking In at 57W57, I pay homage to the library across the street and to the creative leap that artists and viewers take when engaging in their imaginative exchange. Here, some sculptures gather on the reception table. Others, in a bowl, invite one to dig through, take a look, and make a discovery. Pick one up and see how it feels.
Originally from Oregon, Sara Russell made her way to New York City in 1994 to attend Pratt University. She started there as a painter and expanded into the ceramics studio. She is interested in how objects, when placed into existing environments, change their space. She likes the idea of finding something special and unique in an unexpected location. She has shown mostly in New York where, currently, she makes art in her Queens studio and her apartment in Brooklyn.
